Sailing Seminars on Triumph
The non-profit organization, Triumph Sails offers a unique opportunity for individuals young and old to experience the marine environment in a safe and accessible way. Individuals with poor balance, or who require a walker or cane, may not be comfortably accommodated. This 46” wooden sail boat is suited for the shallow calm waters of Little Pleasant Bay and able to navigate in as little as two feet of water. This will allow the sailors onboard Triumph to adventure close to the many pristine islands and the untouched sheltered side of Nauset Beach. The ample deck space and roomy cockpit allow participant seating for ten, and the two masts, jib and lee-boards offer individuals many ways to be involved in the operation of the boat under the guidance of our Sailing Master.

What can you expect if you sign up for one of our Learn to Sail Seminars: This is a wonderful family activity for all ages, and will start on the shore of Pleasant Bay where you will learn about the local marine environment, the tide, weather and basic terminology that will be used onboard Triumph. Remember, conditions can be cooler onboard so bring layers, and sun screen as well as bug spray are needed.
There is only one skipper on the boat and every Land Lubber, Mater or Helmsmen will defer to their instructions. To start we will have everyone done a US Coast Guard- Approved personal floatation device, and if you have one of your own that you prefer, please feel free to bring it along. You will be shuttled out to the 46’ wooden schooner and start by circling the boat to see the basic parts of the boat in entirety and reinforce some of the terms you learned on land.
For those who are limited in mobility, we can arrange a special boarding from a nearby floating dock where it will be easier to step onto the boat, but for most, you will need to be fit enough to climb onboard from a dingy or via a ladder hung off the stern of the boat. Some strength and some ability to do this kind of activity is needed. Once onboard you will sit with the Sailing Master and review all safety rules, be shown where the “head” (toilet) is and how to operate it, in the galley below deck. We have a cooler onboard to keep your food and non-alcoholic beverages cool and we ask you to stow all personal items below deck and not leave any items out where they might slip off the boat.
Your Sailing Master will assign each crew member a specific task and with the help of a mate the Triumph will hoist her sails, cast off the anchor and your learning adventure for the next two hours will begin.
If you are capable, you may be asked to handle the jib sheets, main sail or leeboards and your tasks will rotate through the journey. We will learn how to determine where the wind is coming from and how to move through the Points of Sailing. You will learn basic helmsmen skills if you are interested in taking a turn at the helm and as a group you will learn to tack and jibe the boat sailing up and down wind.
The Triumph will pick up her mooring and the entire crew will assist with lowering her sails and putting her away for the day. You will be ferried back to shore, a bit wind-blown but exuberant from the confidence that comes with learning to sail.
For those who have already learned the basics in your first day out on Pleasant Bay on this majestic boat, we will have follow-up courses for more advanced sailors, where more responsibility for all aspects of sailing will be tailored to your abilities.
We look forward to seeing you out on the Bay.
The Triumph will be back in the water in May and this schedule will be updated then.
